BUSAN / CITY GUIDES

Busan for first-timers: a coast-and-market itinerary that makes sense

Two different sides of Busan — beaches in the east, old downtown food streets in the west.

FIELD NOTES / BUSAN02
01

Treat Busan as two travel zones

Haeundae and Gwangalli belong in a coast-focused day. Jagalchi Market, Nampo-dong and BIFF Square work better as a downtown-focused day. These areas are not next door to one another, so grouping nearby stops is more practical than jumping across the city every few hours.

If you have only one day in Busan, decide whether you want a beach experience or markets and old-town streets first. That single decision can eliminate a lot of unnecessary transit.

02

A beach day: Haeundae and Gwangalli

Begin around Haeundae Beach and keep the afternoon flexible for seaside walks and cafés. Gwangalli is another scenic waterfront neighborhood; consider it later in the day if your energy and transport conditions allow.

Coastal wind and rain can change how enjoyable the day feels. Pack a light extra layer outside summer and do not assume all seasonal beach facilities operate year-round.

03

A downtown day: Jagalchi, Nampo and BIFF Square

Jagalchi and Nampo-dong combine markets, seafood dining and shopping streets. This is a strong route for travelers who like tasting a city through its food rather than buying multiple admission tickets.

If you are traveling with children or have mobility limitations, remember that markets can be crowded and walking surfaces may vary.

Before you book anything
