Gyeongbokgung with hanbok: when is palace admission free?

Avoid common mistakes with traditional clothing rentals, palace opening days and photo routes.

FIELD NOTES / SEOUL12
01

Hanbok can waive the palace admission fee, but rentals cost money

Seoul's official visitor guide says Gyeongbokgung offers free admission to people wearing a complete qualifying hanbok, subject to the palace's clothing guidelines. This is not a free hanbok rental: you normally pay a rental business separately for the outfit and any accessories.

Do the simple cost comparison before booking: a regular palace admission ticket may cost far less than a multi-hour rental, so choose hanbok because you want the cultural and photo experience, not because you expect to save money. Confirm that the outfit you choose meets the official free-admission requirements.

02

Check the Tuesday closure before paying a rental shop

Gyeongbokgung is generally closed on Tuesdays, with exceptions or alternative closures when public holidays affect the schedule. Seasonal closing times also differ, so a late-afternoon booking that works in summer may not work in winter.

Never book a nonrefundable rental and only then check whether the palace is open. Confirm the exact date with the official palace or Visit Seoul website; also check whether your rental shop opens on that day.

03

Pick a rental based on location and return rules

A rental near the palace entrance saves walking time, especially when you are coordinating a group or carrying children’s belongings. Compare changing facilities, lockers, hair styling, sizes, rental duration and fees for returning late.

A longer rental period is not necessarily better: wearing unfamiliar clothing for hours while moving between subway stations and restaurants can be inconvenient. Plan a compact palace-and-neighborhood outing that lets you change back comfortably.

04

A sensible walking plan around the palace

Start from the rental shop, enter the palace, then decide whether to visit the National Palace Museum, a café in Seochon or the nearby traditional streets afterward. The best photos are not always those taken at the busiest gate.

Treat nearby Bukchon as a residential area and respect any access or noise restrictions. If traveling with a wheelchair or stroller, check accessible entrances and do not assume historical surfaces are uniformly flat.

Check official sources

Transport, prices, closures and entry rules change. Verify time-sensitive details with current official information before your trip.
