Where to stay in Seoul: Myeongdong vs Hongdae vs Jongno

Compare Seoul accommodation neighborhoods based on your first-day arrival, sightseeing interests, late evenings and family needs.

FIELD NOTES / SEOUL07
01

The best neighborhood is the one that reduces repeat journeys

Myeongdong, Hongdae and Jongno can all work for a first Seoul visit. Instead of trusting a single universal ranking, mark your top three places on a map and see which accommodation area keeps your daily trips manageable.

The exact hotel matters just as much as the neighborhood. A hotel near a good subway interchange can feel more convenient than a more famous address that is far from the station entrance.

02

Myeongdong: convenient city-center shopping and sightseeing

Myeongdong is a natural fit when shopping, downtown landmarks and a central sightseeing base matter to you. It can be a busy commercial area, so compare hotel locations on side streets if you prefer quiet evenings.

Confirm the real walking distance to transit, whether the property has step-free access and how you will get there from the airport. Do not assume every hotel using the Myeongdong name is in the same block.

03

Hongdae: cafés, evening energy and the airport rail line

The Hongik University area suits visitors interested in casual cafés, street culture, shopping and an active evening atmosphere. Its relationship to the AREX all-stop rail line can be useful for some airport itineraries.

If traveling with children or if you sleep lightly, look at the street your room faces. A peaceful accommodation a few minutes away from the busiest blocks may suit you better than a room above nightlife.

04

Jongno: palaces, heritage walks and a calmer daytime pace

Jongno is useful for travelers prioritizing Gyeongbokgung, traditional areas and history-focused walking routes. The area covers several different transit situations, so evaluate a particular station rather than relying only on the district name.

For families, include breaks, stroller access and realistic distances between entrances. Compare cancellation rules and fees directly with the accommodation provider before booking.

05

How to choose without making the wrong booking

Build a rough first two days, identify your arrival transport, and choose the area with the easiest repeated journeys. On a map, check the hotel’s actual entrance rather than a marketing label.

Compare rooms on practical terms: luggage storage, elevator, check-in time, real guest reviews and your likely evening routine. Booking availability and prices change constantly, so do not treat an article as a live inventory feed.

Check official sources

Transport, prices, closures and entry rules change. Verify time-sensitive details with current official information before your trip.
