First check whether your phone supports an eSIM
eSIM can be convenient because it does not need a physical card, but your specific phone model, carrier lock status and software configuration matter. 'My phone supports eSIM' is not enough if it is still locked to a foreign mobile network or cannot add the required mobile plan.
Check the phone manufacturer's compatibility instructions and your current carrier's lock status before paying. If you are unsure, a physical SIM or a temporary roaming arrangement may be easier than troubleshooting data service at the airport.
Data-only plans and local-number plans are different
A cheap data plan may not include voice calls or an ordinary Korean mobile number. Some services offer incoming calls or limited voice features under separate conditions; other options are strictly for data. If you need to receive verification SMS, do not assume every tourist plan will work with every Korean app.
Ask the operator whether the plan offers a usable phone number, SMS, international calling, tethering or only internet access. Purchase by the functions you need rather than the amount of data alone.
Airport pickup can be a useful backup
Korean operators such as KT sell tourist-oriented eSIM, physical SIM and Wi-Fi router products; the official operator site lists relevant airports and counters. A physical-card option may involve collecting it after arrival, whereas compatible eSIM plans can sometimes be installed in advance.
If your flight arrives late, confirm the specific airport terminal and the desk's current hours. Keep your booking number and passport information ready if required. Do not assume an airport counter is staffed at every hour just because the terminal is open.
Compare the true cost and activation timing
Check whether a plan starts at purchase, installation or first network connection in Korea. Compare data allowances, fair-use or speed-reduction rules, the advertised duration in calendar days versus 24-hour periods, and refund policies.
A hotspot router may make sense for a group that stays together, but it means managing battery life, returns and possible deposits. For people who split up during the day, separate mobile connectivity can be more practical.
A checklist to finish before the flight
Save offline directions to your accommodation; confirm the eSIM QR code or pickup instructions; keep access to your original phone number for bank and account verification; and test your phone settings according to the provider's instructions.
For the most current operator-specific terms, compare providers using official pages. Promotional discounts and included benefits can change without notice.
Transport, prices, closures and entry rules change. Verify time-sensitive details with current official information before your trip.
