Two 'Egyptian museums' that international guests confuse
The Grand Egyptian Museum near Giza is a new large archaeological institution known for the Tutankhamun Galleries, dramatic main stair and Khufu's Boats Museum. The historic Egyptian Museum at Tahrir Square in central Cairo remains another functioning museum with its own ticket, opening hours and collections.
A map search for 'Egyptian Museum' may display either location, and a taxi ride between them is not a quick within-building corridor. Before purchasing from anyone, compare the exact venue name and official web domain. A ticket showing one museum cannot simply be scanned at the other's turnstile.
Why Egyptian, foreign and expat totals differ
GEM's original published admission table lists adult EGP200 for Egyptians, EGP1,590 for Arabs or other nationalities, and EGP800 for the separately defined expatriate category. It also lists different child and student brackets, which makes a low Egyptian fare misleading when shown as the ordinary tourist admission.
These figures come from an official public ticket grid that may not be the latest live calculator. The CURRENT tickets.gem.eg interactive booking flow requires a date/time and class before displaying final totals. Treat the older grid as evidence of structural tariff differences, not a fixed promise that a foreign adult can pay a particular amount at check-in.
Timed advance entry is not optional
The museum FAQ states that tickets must be bought online in advance with a selected entry time slot. A chosen slot describes the arrival window rather than a restriction that forces visitors to leave after sixty minutes. The system asks for accurate traveller details.
An apparent third-party 'open ticket' offer or tour screenshot is not necessarily the museum's real QR admission. Especially during busy school vacations and popular evening dates, use the original ticket page and keep the confirmed barcode available offline.
Which spaces the original general ticket covers
The official checkout identifies Tutankhamun Galleries, Main Galleries, Grand Hall, Grand Stairs, Khufu's Boats Museum, commercial area and exterior gardens as included in the general experience. These are the core spaces for a visitor deciding whether the standard product will satisfy a full-day museum interest.
