The practical takeaway
Hong Kong International Airport on Lantau has excellent access to the urban area, but the fastest railway does not magically stop at every street in Tsim Sha Tsui. MTR Airport Express runs to Kowloon and Hong Kong Station, whereas Citybus A21 follows urban Kowloon streets around Mong Kok, Jordan and Nathan Road toward Hung Hom. For a hotel beside a listed A21 stop, the slower bus may save both money and a final taxi trip.
Hong Kong airport: what the train and street bus actually cost
MTR is quicker into Hong Kong Island rail stations; Citybus A21 is much cheaper for a Nathan Road/Tsim Sha Tsui hotel. Prices are charged by operator, not one unified airport admission.

Frequently asked before visiting
Does Airport Express take me directly to Nathan Road?
No. It terminates at the MTR Kowloon or Hong Kong airport rail stations, which may require another transfer.
Is A21 HK$34.60 just an old blog rate?
It is shown on Citybus's live official airport-to-Hung Hom A21 fare page checked October 2026.
Can I ride A21 to Central on Hong Kong Island?
No. A21 chiefly serves the Kowloon corridor. Use an appropriate island bus or Airport Express and onward connections.
Does A21 run all night?
No. Check its exact timetable and the separate N21/NA21 night services for an after-midnight arrival.

Airport Express and A21 bus do not serve identical hotel doors
If your hotel is close to Central's rail connections, Airport Express to Hong Kong Station can remove the uncertainty of road traffic. If your lodging is near a Kowloon Airport Express station but not a convenient city bus stop, add the walk or onward transfer when calculating the real cost. Do not use a blanket 'all hotels in Kowloon' recommendation.
The official MTR price depends on which payment medium you use
MTR's current ticket table shows HK$120 for an adult trip between Airport and Hong Kong Station when paying by Octopus, eligible contactless card or QR method, compared with HK$130 for a regular smart-ticket single. To or from Kowloon Station the corresponding adult amounts are HK$105 and HK$115. A paper round-trip product has its own validity and can be useful for a short return, but is not an unlimited urban MTR pass.
For a group of two adults staying in Central, two ordinary adult Octopus airport-rail fares total HK$240 before any city connection. For a pair bound for Kowloon Station the rail segment is HK$210. These are the published operator fares, not a verified taxi quote, and children aged 3–11 have separate Octopus-eligible fares.
A21 is much cheaper and has a different destination advantage
Citybus's current official A21 route page lists adult HK$34.60 from the airport ground transportation centre toward Hung Hom through Nathan Road neighbourhoods. Two adult tickets therefore cost HK$69.20—substantially below two rail fares to Kowloon or Hong Kong. The cheaper bus can be a stronger door-to-door choice when it stops a few streets from your actual hotel.
It may take longer through urban traffic, especially around busy Kowloon roads, and it does not serve every hotel or cross directly into Central. Check the operator's stop list and direction before boarding. Separate night routes, such as N21 or NA21, have different schedules, stops and fares; do not assume an A21 ticket automatically works at 2am.
There are extra offers, but check their restrictions
MTR publishes group and other fare products in its own ticket and fare system; a couple should compare its active official deals before buying independent single journeys. Citybus also advertises a qualifying same-day return reduction for selected Cityflyer routes when the same Octopus or supported payment account is used under the operator's tapping rules. This is not a free second day ticket.
For a family with school-age children, both services have child concessions but with different purchase and payment rules. Citybus's A21 route data currently shows a HK$17.30 child fare for eligible riders, while MTR shows a HK$52.50 child Octopus fare for the Airport Express Kowloon segment. Do not apply a cardholder discount to a child who cannot legally use that card category.
The nighttime flight problem is about airport exit time
A plane arriving close to midnight can leave a passenger outside immigration long after a preferred railway has stopped operating. Check the first and last train from Hong Kong Station if catching an early flight, and verify whether N21/NA21 reaches the desired hotel before choosing a cheap overnight bus. Delayed luggage, arrival paperwork and walking to the bus terminus all consume buffer time.
In a September 2026 Hong Kong discussion, a traveller arriving around midnight asked about the N21; locals described airport bus reliability but advised checking stops and using the stop request bell. The same thread suggested NA21 for some areas but noted that it would not serve everywhere south of Mong Kok. This illustrates why copying the wrong night route is risky.
A real family report shows how last-mile convenience wins
A September 2025 traveller with a stroller and three bags asked how to reach a hotel near Jordan. Commenters disagreed: some favoured A21 because it dropped passengers near the hotel, while others preferred a metered taxi and emphasized the burden of handling baggage. A later July 2026 follow-up confirmed a traveller took one of the suggested airport bus options successfully. These individual reports are contextual, not a universal customer rating.
Visitors who can manage a short transfer and want to save time may still value Airport Express. Others prefer a scenic double-decker ride along Nathan Road. Compare your terminal exit time, luggage, exact Hong Kong neighbourhood, legal child fare, the need for a final taxi, and current service alerts rather than ranking transport by train speed alone.
