Should you see Lucca, Pisa or both?
Pisa and Lucca make an appealing western-Tuscany pairing because they offer completely different attractions. Pisa’s most recognized sites are concentrated around Piazza dei Miracoli, including its leaning tower and monumental cathedral. Lucca is a compact walled city built around broad tree-lined ramparts, historic churches, Piazza dell’Anfiteatro and small shops. Lucca often rewards a slower stroll, while Pisa can work as a focused half-day.
If you have a single Florence day, combining both is realistic provided you start early and are selective. A full visit to Pisa’s museums and a long bicycle ride around Lucca’s walls will not fit comfortably alongside leisurely meals in one outing. Travelers with two days should consider sleeping in Lucca rather than spending every evening commuting to Florence.
Florence to Pisa by regional train
Visit Tuscany confirms Florence Santa Maria Novella as a railway hub with frequent regional connections to Pisa and Lucca. For Pisa, begin by checking a regional service to Pisa Centrale. From there the Field of Miracles is on the northern side of the city, so add a town walk or local transport instead of treating the station and Leaning Tower as neighboring buildings.
The price of a regional rail ticket is not the total cost of a Pisa visit if you plan to climb the tower or tour several monuments. A traveler content with photos of the exterior may spend little on attractions; a family booking multiple timed admissions should budget significantly more and confirm age rules before purchasing.
Pisa to Lucca: two stations, one connected day
Pisa and Lucca are linked by regional rail, usually making Lucca a manageable second stop. Search Pisa Centrale to Lucca on Trenitalia and confirm whether a particular itinerary involves a change; do not assume every service has the same route. The Lucca station sits just outside the historic wall, and entry through nearby gates makes it convenient to start a city-center walking loop.
One efficient sequence is Florence → Pisa → Lucca → Florence. Another is to visit Lucca before lunch and finish at Pisa when tower photo opportunities suit you better. Choose based on real departure times, timed tower entry and your energy. Check the last train after a special event, and distinguish the station name Lucca from suburban stops.
2026 Florence–Lucca–Pisa sightseeing bus alternative
Florence’s tourism authority describes a new sightseeing-bus Green Line linking Florence, Lucca and Pisa, launched in March 2026. Unlike the standard train, it packages intercity tourist stops with a hop-on/hop-off approach and optional self-guided digital walking content. This could reduce the need to compare multiple rail tickets, but it is a separate commercial service.
Check the service calendar, departure points, pass length and daily frequency before choosing it over rail. A multi-stop route can be less flexible if buses are infrequent, while a regional train may be quicker for travelers who only want Pisa. Do not treat the two transport products as interchangeable or assume the sightseeing bus includes attraction entry.
Pisa's Square of Miracles: tickets and the city beyond
Piazza dei Miracoli contains the Leaning Tower, Cathedral, Baptistery and other major historic buildings. Walking through the public square and taking photographs does not equal a ticket that admits you to the tower. Check the official Opera della Primaziale Pisana ticket options and choose only the monuments you genuinely want to enter. Tower access is timed and has rules that may exclude younger children.
Allow some time for Pisa beyond the standard tower photo: cross or walk beside the Arno, enjoy a nearby cafe or simply experience the city streets connecting the station to the monumental center. If time is tight, prioritize the ticketed tower slot first and then use any surplus to explore; reversing that can risk missing a nonrefundable entry time.
Lucca's green city walls are the headline experience
Lucca’s Renaissance-era defensive walls form a park-like circuit of just over 4 km around the historic center. The broad, tree-lined walkway is one of the city’s greatest pleasures; you can experience a short section on foot for free, or rent a bicycle locally to cover more distance. Bike rentals are not automatically included in a walking tour or city ticket.
For visitors with limited mobility, choose a mostly flat stretch on the rampart once you reach an accessible entry point, and avoid promising that every ramp or bastion has identical conditions. Families should watch for cyclists and give children enough breaks. In summer, tree shade can be a welcome change after standing in lines at Pisa.
A useful Lucca center walk: amphitheater, church, tower
From the wall, wander via San Michele in Foro and the shop-lined Via Fillungo toward Piazza dell’Anfiteatro. The elliptical piazza follows the footprint of a former Roman amphitheater and today is bordered by restaurants and colorful buildings. The square itself is part of ordinary town life; you do not need to buy a guided experience to see its characteristic shape.
Continue toward San Frediano or the Cathedral of San Martino, both important to Lucca’s religious heritage. Guinigi Tower offers views and an unusual rooftop tree garden, but the climb requires many steps and an admission ticket. If you are exhausted after Pisa or traveling with toddlers, skip the tower and focus on Lucca’s street-level courtyards.
An illustrative full-day timetable
A practical example starts with an early departure from Florence, two to three hours focused on Pisa’s monuments, then a train to Lucca for lunch and a three-hour afternoon walk. Return to Florence on a train with a comfortable buffer. This is a planning framework, not a claim about a specific train or opening time; book any tower entry around the connections displayed for your travel date.
A slower version spends the morning in Lucca and includes a bike ride around a section of wall, lunch in a shaded square and Pisa’s tower in the late afternoon. Each plan is realistic only if you deliberately skip some paid interiors. Be mindful of queues, rail disruptions and heat when calculating the end of your day.
Private Florence pickup versus doing it yourself
One verified GetYourGuide listing offers a private eight-hour trip from Florence to Lucca and Pisa by deluxe van, including hotel pickup and a driver or guide. Its product page describes Lucca’s historic lanes and walls, then Pisa’s Miracle Square. Fuel, parking and tolls are included, while lunch, site admission and tips require extra spending. This is a private-group product, not the same pricing model as a normal bus excursion.
Use a private tour if your group values door-to-door pickup, control over stops and avoiding station transfers. For two budget-conscious adults, regional trains will usually offer substantially more control over expense, but compare the actual private group price and included pickup against individual transport fares. Avoid describing a private van excursion as a cheap public tour.
Costs and ticket traps
Build your DIY budget from Firenze Santa Maria Novella–Pisa, Pisa–Lucca and Lucca–Florence train fares, any local bus, tower entry, paid church or tower visits and optional bicycles. A train fare can change with service and date, so check Trenitalia instead of relying on an old article’s euro amount. Parking costs should only enter the comparison if you choose a car.
For a private excursion, confirm whether the displayed cost is per group or per person and whether the provider charges extra for additional travelers. Make sure the named attractions are actual stops rather than stock photographs. Do not assume a Pisa Tower entrance is provided just because the tour includes a visit to the tower’s square.
Accessibility, rain, events and final checklist
Lucca’s old center is comparatively compact but has stone paving, cobbles and individual church steps. Pisa’s monument area can be busy, and the Leaning Tower climb is unsuitable for those who cannot safely use steep stairs. Families can combine free exterior views with a relaxed Lucca park walk; people who struggle with heat may prefer an earlier day or autumn travel.
Lucca Comics & Games is scheduled for late October into early November 2026 according to Visit Tuscany, so those dates can bring exceptional crowds, accommodation pressure and altered access. Verify current rail services, town events, admission windows and the final return journey before making a booking.
