The practical takeaway
Singapore Changi Airport connects into a well-managed public transport system, but the airport train is not a non-stop service to every city hotel. From Changi Airport MRT (CG2), the operator tells passengers to change at Tanah Merah (EW4) toward the East West Line, or at Expo (CG1/DT35) onto the Downtown Line. The more useful interchange depends on whether you are staying near City Hall, Bugis, Marina Bay, Chinatown or a less central neighbourhood.
Singapore airport: a metered taxi price has extra charges
Changi's S$25–45 estimate is before separate airport, peak and midnight surcharges. MRT offers a lower-cost daytime alternative but requires interchange choices.
| Option | 2026 price | What it includes | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| MRT via Tanah Merah (EW4) | Transit fare at checkout | East–West Line connection from Airport CG2 | Foreign bank card admin fee can apply |
| MRT via Expo (CG1/DT35) | Transit fare at checkout | Downtown Line connection for relevant hotels | Choose actual destination; not always direct |
| Typical metered taxi to city | Approx. S$25–45 | Ride to central Singapore at ordinary conditions | Airport and time-of-day surcharges additional |
| Airport surcharge 17:00–23:59 | +S$8 | Evening pickup surcharge | Added to applicable metered charges |
| Airport surcharge other times | +S$6 | Other pickup times | Midnight +50% or peak +25% may also apply |
| Official prebooked four-seat vehicle | S$70 | Airport concierge fare to standard Singapore area | Not the same as an ordinary taxi estimate |
Frequently asked before visiting
Does the train run from Changi Airport all night?
No. Changi publishes daily first/last MRT schedules; overnight arrivals should evaluate permitted taxis and ride-hail services.
Is the advertised S$25 city taxi fare all-inclusive?
No. Airport surcharge S$6/S$8 and separate midnight or peak-hour fees may apply.
Can I travel to Chinatown by MRT?
Yes via a suitable Downtown Line or other interchange, but check the station exit and train operating hours.
Does a foreign Visa or Mastercard work?
Singapore transport accepts eligible contactless payment cards but Changi cautions foreign-issued cards may incur an administration fee.

The terminal and hotel address matter more than the fastest route graphic
A solo visitor with one carry-on can comfortably choose public rail during its operating hours. A late-night group with large suitcases may find an official metered taxi or licensed private hire more practical. Do not assume the Jewel shopping complex or an airline's arrival at Terminal 4 has the same walk to CG2 as a rail-adjacent terminal.
The official taxi estimate excludes important surcharges
Changi Airport's own transfer guide estimates an ordinary taxi ride to Singapore city at S$25–45, with a metered fare rather than a universal flat airport price. Airport pickup adds S$8 from 17:00 to 23:59 every day, and S$6 at other times. The airport also lists a nationwide 50% midnight surcharge from 00:00 to 05:59 on the final metered fare and separate peak-period additions.
A visitor landing at 20:00 should not read 'S$25' as the mandatory grand total, because the S$8 airport surcharge is additional. Even a high quoted estimate can vary by taxi company, travel distance, traffic, time and legal surcharges. Licensed taxi queue locations exist at the arrivals areas of Terminals 1–4, while private-hire services use signed ride-hailing pickup points.
MRT operating hours and payment options
The airport says the train from Changi to Tanah Merah begins at 05:31 Monday–Saturday and 05:59 Sunday/public holidays. The last train connecting toward Tuas Link departs the airport around 23:18 under the listed timetable, while other short transfers can have different last-service times. Trains are not a reliable round-the-clock plan for someone clearing immigration after midnight.
Singapore accepts contactless Mastercard, Visa and NETS in supported forms, alongside the eligible EZ-Link and other local travel media. Changi cautions that an administrative fee may apply to overseas-issued bank cards. A family should estimate the fare per cardholder and check whether children qualify for concession cards, rather than assume tapping one bank card can automatically pay multiple people.
When a taxi, Grab or official airport transfer pays off
A family carrying a stroller, two big cases and children's bags may spend more effort changing MRT lines than the savings justify. Changi lists licensed app-based providers including Grab, Gojek, Zig, Tada, Ryde and others. Their quoted fares and dynamic pricing differ from ordinary metered taxi estimates, so compare a live app offer with the actual airport taxi surcharge at the time you arrive.
There is also an official airport ground-transport concierge with a published four-seater vehicle transfer of S$70 and six-seater at S$75 to standard Singapore locations, with some remote-site surcharges. This is not the same as a standard taxi quote. It can make sense when you want a known private transfer cost or need six seats, but check luggage capacity and special child-seat requirements.
Genuine 2026 luggage experiences from residents
In February 2026 askSingapore, a commuter asked if travelling to Changi with a 29-inch suitcase would be manageable on the MRT. Several residents said large luggage is common at quieter hours and recommended keeping doors clear; another warned that the Tanah Merah airport interchange can involve a change of platform level, while an accessible lift is available. These are individual experiences, not a real-time lift operating guarantee.
In a May 2026 SingaporeTravel question about reaching Chinatown, local respondents recommended taxi or Grab for speed and no cash handling but noted that MRT could be cheaper with a transfer. The conflicting advice reflects luggage and arrival-time differences, not a universal rule that public transport is uncomfortable.
The actual route for a Chinatown or central hotel
For a hotel near Downtown Line stations, transferring at Expo may simplify the journey compared with changing at Tanah Merah and again in the city. For east–west corridor hotels such as those near City Hall, Tanah Merah is often a natural interchange. Always check the station's most convenient street exit and accessibility arrangements; a five-minute walk may be uncomfortable during tropical downpours with heavy suitcases.
If arriving at an unusual hour, check the live SMRT/LTA journey planner, actual last train and whether a scheduled public bus is operating. Treat taxi ride-time estimates as conditional on road congestion. If travelling onwards to Johor Bahru in Malaysia, cross-border taxi regulations are separate; a standard Singapore Grab booking does not grant permission to cross the border.
Six checks before paying for the transfer
Verify your Changi arrival terminal and hotel postcode; compare Tanah Merah versus Expo; check the actual final train, contactless-card administrative fee and eligible family concessions; price a taxi with S$6 or S$8 airport surcharge plus peak/midnight add-ons; and confirm how many legal passenger and luggage spaces your car needs.
