Renting a car in Jeju as a foreign visitor: licence, insurance and pickup

What to verify before booking a rental car in Jeju Island, including international permits and insurance terms.

FIELD NOTES / JEJU15
01

Check legal driving eligibility before comparing prices

Jeju's official visitor guide tells foreign drivers to bring an International Driving Permit and appropriate identification, and to carry required documents while driving. Whether an overseas licence or permit is accepted depends on the issuing authority and applicable rules, so verify eligibility before paying for a vehicle.

An International Driving Permit is not the same as an online 'international driving licence' sold by a random website. Check the document's issuing body, validity period and whether the licence class fits the vehicle you want to rent. A rental counter can decline service if documentation does not meet its rules.

02

Insurance wording can change the total financial risk

A low daily rate does not tell you how much you could owe after an accident. Ask whether collision damage coverage is included, what the deductible or customer liability is, whether downtime and towing are excluded, and whether glass, tires or underbody damage have special terms.

The Visit Jeju transport guide urges visitors to review rental insurance carefully. Instead of treating a label such as 'full coverage' as a promise of zero liability, compare actual contract wording and the maximum potential out-of-pocket amount.

03

Airport pickup is not always directly outside arrivals

Jeju rental providers commonly have shuttle pickup arrangements away from the airport terminal. Confirm which shuttle stop applies to your booking, where you meet the driver, the last pickup time and how long the vehicle inspection may take.

Allow margin before your departing flight to return the vehicle, document its condition, transfer by shuttle and pass airport security. If the agency's pickup hours end before your flight lands, do not book based on the airport's 24-hour operation alone.

04

Photograph the car and review the fuel policy

At pickup, photograph or video the exterior, wheels, windscreen and interior and make sure existing damage is marked on the rental agreement. Check fuel or battery-return requirements, late-return fees, additional-driver policies and mileage terms.

Ask for the emergency contact and accident-reporting procedure. If renting an electric vehicle, plan charging around rural stops and return requirements, not only the headline battery range.

05

When you should consider not renting

If your holiday is mostly one city zone or you are uncomfortable with local driving and parking, revisit whether the freedom of a car offsets its cost and responsibility. Public buses and occasional taxis can work for a narrower itinerary.

For scenic coastal days across multiple distant locations, a suitable rental may still be convenient, but only after you know your insurance, driver eligibility and pickup arrangements.

Check official sources

Transport, prices, closures and entry rules change. Verify time-sensitive details with current official information before your trip.
