The October 26 closure changes what a ticket can deliver
The U.S. National Park Service announced on September 28, 2026 that safety work to replace the ferry dock pilings would close Alcatraz Island to public ferry landings from October 26, targeting completion by November 18. The island had an earlier inspection and temporary repair closure in April, so the new autumn project is part of an ongoing dock-safety programme.
The sole ferry concessioner confirms a projected return November 19 and says ALL island tours scheduled October 26 through November 18 are cancelled. This is not a marketing blackout for a few cheap seats: no regular Day, Night or Behind the Scenes island visit is supposed to land during this period. Check NPS conditions for project changes before arranging a non-refundable Bay Area trip.
Day, Night and Behind the Scenes are not the same pass
The regular Day Tour at US$47.95 adult includes both legs of the ferry from Pier 33 and the award-winning Cellhouse Audio Tour. A US$59.65 Night Tour includes distinct evening programming, opportunities for talks and an approximately two- to three-hour island visit, but it is only available on its own scheduled nights.
The much more expensive US$104.65 Behind the Scenes Tour admits a small group to restricted areas with an approximate ninety-minute guide, then includes the Night Tour. A regular Day Tour ticket cannot simply be upgraded at the dock to the premium private-access route, and a Night Tour is not a guaranteed ghost-story performance on every sailing.
What 'free national park entrance' really means
Because the National Park Service does not charge a land entrance fee at Alcatraz, an America the Beautiful annual pass or senior card does not reduce the ferry-ticket charge. The transport license, preservation programmes, concessions and Cellhouse audio service form the actual paid ticket cost.
The NPS page says Alcatraz City Cruises is its ONLY authorised ferry permitted to disembark passengers on the island. Independent San Francisco boat companies may sell valid bay cruises, but these do not come with landing rights. In reseller descriptions, verify that a genuine Pier 33 landing ferry QR is issued separately before treating a package as Alcatraz admission.
How cancelled bookings are refunded, and how not to lose money
For a direct Alcatraz City Cruises reservation during the announced maintenance period, the operator says no separate refund request is necessary: the booking is cancelled and the money goes to the original card, normally allowing five to seven business days. Avoid contacting the NPS visitor centre to demand that it refund a marketplace tour product it did not sell.
A tourist who used an unrelated hotel concierge, ticket marketplace or combined tour may be subject to that seller's own arrangement. Outside maintenance closures, the operator's normal voluntary cancellation policy is typically at least 72 hours before ferry departure for a refund. A closure refund and a discretionary cancellation are different causes and deadlines.
Walking, audio languages and practical boarding choices
The cellhouse is about 0.25 mile above the dock, with an elevation gain equivalent to roughly thirteen building storeys. The operator describes a Sustainable Easy Access Transport shuttle for eligible mobility needs, but visitors should review actual NPS assistance details and accessible ferry boarding before selecting a departure.
The standard included Cellhouse Audio Tour supports English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Mandarin, so a foreign visitor does not need an add-on private interpreter merely to understand the prison history. Pier 33 check-in lines and airport-to-pier transfers are separate from the ferry price.
Why the Discovery Cruise is not a prison visit
During the first repair week October 26–November 1, the company offers a ninety-minute San Francisco Bay Discovery Cruise with up-close water views of the island and other bay landmarks. Its own repair notice explicitly states the boat DOES NOT DOCK AT ALCATRAZ ISLAND. It therefore does not provide entry into the cell blocks or any island ranger programme.
A family whose only travel date falls during the closure may choose that bay cruise as a different sightseeing product, but it is misleading to advertise it as an equivalent replacement for the prison tour.
